Black to the future: Tool Care Hire adds X series machines

An Exeter-based plant and tool hirer has added seven new X Series machines to its fleet – six of which are bedecked in limited edition black livery.

In the competitive world of plant hire, standing out from the crowd is fundamental to winning crucial contracts. Understanding the needs of your customers is the recipe for success. All evidence suggests they are looking for machinery which is reliable, fit for purpose and offers best-in-class comfort and functionality for operators.

With over 30 years’ experience Tool Care Hire truly appreciate what their customers need. It has built a fleet of over 500 items of plant including 100 excavators, 30 telehandlers, 30 access platforms and 70 dumpers – the vast majority of which are JCB.

It is this commitment to offering the very best which was the catalyst for Tool Care Hire investing in a fleet of seven new JCB X Series excavators – including six all-black limited-edition machines which are causing quite a stir near the company’s headquarters in Devon.

Only the best

Family-owned Tool Care Hire started from humble beginnings at a small premises in Exmouth in the 1980s and has since expanded to its current location on the sizeable Marsh Barton Industrial Estate in Exeter.

This ongoing growth is testament to the hard work of the company founder Martin Phillips and his two sons, Sam and Ben, who now both work in the business. The company is committed to providing the very best customer service and to making sure that all their kit is up to the rigorous challenges of both the DIY and trade customers they supply.

And providing reliable plant hire services is simplified for Tool Care Hire as longstanding supplier Holt JCB is based on the same industrial estate in Exeter, so the very best in plant machinery sales and support is just on their doorstep and the two companies have enjoyed a relationship that goes back many years.

The JCB 140X is a really pleasant machine - nice and smooth to operate. The cab is really good inside, with everything where you want it to be. It looks great in black too.

Powerful personas

Serving happy customers across the South-West from its depots in Exeter, Exmouth, Torbay and Okehampton, Tool Care Hire know the value of continuously re-investing in the latest, up-to-date equipment. It is for this reason that the black-edition X Series tracked excavators, released only last year, captured their interest.

As Tool Care Hire, Hire Manager Sam Phillips said: “Holt JCB alerted us to the availability of the black machines, but we didn’t need too much convincing, because in our experience, people do seem to like something a little bit different. We are already finding that customers are calling us specifically asking for the black machines. It’s a great marketing tool for us, and we have given the six machines names so each one has its own persona: Black Beauty, Black Adder, Black Panther, Black Magic, Black Sheep and Black Pudding. It’s been a lot of fun and has been getting us noticed locally.”

They are already causing a stir as one of their customer’s operators, Jason attests: “The JCB 140X is a really pleasant machine – nice and smooth to operate. The cab is really good inside, with everything where you want it to be. It looks great in black too.”

The limited-edition black X Series machines join the JCB backhoe loaders and Hydradigs that were previously given the all-black treatment and injects a further stand-out to an already much-loved stalwart of the JCB fleet – which has proved increasingly popular since its launch in 2019.
